Deltares Delft3D FM Suite 2026.01: Integrated 1D/2D/3D Hydrodynamic & Morphodynamic Modeling Software

Deltares Delft3D FM Suite 2026.01 represents the next generation of water modeling technology, replacing the traditional structured Delft3D model with an advanced flexible mesh (unstructured grid) approach . This 2026.01 release is the current General Availability (GA) release applicable to all waters, offered in two main distributions: Hydro-Morphodynamics (HM) and Hydro-Morphodynamics & Water Quality (HMWQ) .

Delft3D FM simulates the interaction of water, sediment, ecology, and water quality in time and space, using unstructured grids that allow modelers to refine resolution exactly where needed—higher detail in complex areas (e.g., around structures or bends) and coarser resolution in open waters for computational efficiency . The suite is primarily used for modeling natural environments like coastal, estuarine, lake, and river areas, but is equally suitable for artificial environments such as harbors, locks, and urban drainage systems .

This 2026.01 release is a major milestone, providing unique 1D/2D/3D modeling suites for integrated water solutions .

⚡ Key Features & Capabilities

???? Flexible Mesh (Unstructured Grid) Technology

  • 1D/2D/3D Integrated Modeling in a single framework .

  • Unstructured grid allows local refinement—high resolution around structures, bends, or areas of interest, coarser resolution elsewhere.

  • Better representation of complex geometries (harbors, islands, river confluences) compared to traditional structured grids.

???? Hydrodynamics & Flow Simulation

  • Shallow water equations solver (2D and 3D) for open channel and coastal flows.

  • Real-time coupling between 1D (river networks, channels) and 2D (floodplains, coastal areas) domains.

????️ Morphodynamics & Sediment Transport

  • Bed load and suspended load transport calculations.

  • Bed level update over time for morphological simulations (estuaries, coasts, rivers).

  • Dredging and disposal scenario modeling.

???? Waves & Coastal Processes

  • Wave propagation (refraction, shoaling, breaking) for coastal applications.

  • Wave-current interaction (coupling with flow).

???? Water Quality & Ecology (HMWQ distribution)

  • Transport and fate of substances (nutrients, algae, pathogens, contaminants).

  • Ecological modeling (eutrophication, algal blooms, DO/BOD).

  • Temperature modeling.

????️ Structure & Hydraulic Works Modeling

  • Weirs, gates, culverts, pumps, barriers, and hydraulic structures.

  • Real-time control logic for gates/weirs (flow control).

????️ High-Performance Computing (HPC)

  • OpenMP (multi-core shared memory) for single-node speed-up.

  • MPI (distributed memory) for multi-node clusters.

  • GPU acceleration (optional) for extreme performance.

  • Apptainer container support for HPC clusters using Slurm and Intel MPI .

???? What’s New in Version 2026.01

The Delft3D FM Suite undergoes continuous development, and the 2026.01 release introduces significant new features and improvements. Detailed presentations were delivered at the Delft Software Days (DSD-INT 2025) covering the latest capabilities .

Key Enhancements:

  • 1D-2D-3D architecture refinements for integrated water solutions (GA status achieved) .

  • HMWQ (Hydro-Morphodynamics & Water Quality) distribution—new GA release for water quality and ecological modeling.

  • OpenMP parallelization improvements for faster computation on multi-core workstations.

  • Enhanced morphological acceleration for long-term simulations (years/decades).

  • Improved coupling between wave and flow models.
